Salt Lake City Community Information Settled by Mormon pioneers in 1847, today Salt Lake City is a haven for people of all cultures and creeds. The diverse population of SLC makes for a robust community of almost 200,000. To visit Salt Lake City is to be impressed by the majestic beauty of its monuments, and pleased by its well-planned streets and buildings. Even the earliest settlers of SLC knew that this place would be renowned world-wide, and they planned accordingly, laying out a city grid that even to this day eases traffic woes. The breathtaking mountain range and blue waters of Great Salt Lake serve as a counterpoint to this lovely gem of a city nestled in the valley. The climate tends toward beautifully warm, dry summers with crisp winters containing a healthy amount of snow.

Education Salt Lake City provides schooling opportunities for children of all beliefs, with Latter Day Saints schools as well as other private and public institutions. The school District is currently reorganizing to provide better access and lower student-teacher ratios. Currently there are a large number of elementary schools with two dozen high schools in the city. The high birth rate ensures that SLC's government realizes the importance of easy access to schooling and puts children's needs high on the list of priorities. Post-secondary students have a good range of choices with the University of Utah, Westminster College, Salt Lake Community College, Brigham Young University, University of Phoenix (the Utah campus), and others.
Recreation The area around Salt Lake City provides many opportunities to enjoy the great outdoors. The Great Salt Lake is a fun experience for swimmers---because of the high salinity, it is almost impossible to sink! The nearby mountains provide an excellent venue for camping, hiking, rock climbing, and skiing. On leveler ground, golfers will be pleased with the selection of golf courses---ranging from beginner to expert difficulty. For those who prefer a faster pace of life, the Raging Waters theme park is home to over 30 different thrill rides! Shoppers will be delighted to make a pilgrimage to Zions Cooperative Mercantile Institution, America's first department store. Other shopping venues include Crossroads Plaza, Trolley Square, The Gateway, and various small shops scattered throughout the city. For high culture, the city is known worldwide as home to the Mormon Tabernacle Choir. Other notable additions include the Utah Symphony, Utah Opera, and Ballet West---some of the oldest established companies in the States. The area also has a number of museums and art centers, many focusing on the journey and challenges of the pioneer founders of the city.
